Organization Mission
Literacy Volunteers of America began in 1962 as a small, grassroots effort to wipe out illiteracy in Syracuse, New York. We are currently coordinating a number of activities relating to literacy education, these include:
One-to-one free tutoring in Basic Reading or
English as a Second Language for adults in Erie
County
Youth Mentoring at Charter Enterprise School
(reading and social skills development with a
caring adult for children in grades 4 through 8
funded by the US/DOE)
Peer-to-Peer Tutoring Programs (trained teenagers tutoring youth in the community)
Neighborhood Literacy Drop-In-Centers
Family Literacy Programming
Type of Volunteer Needed
Tutors, we will train you.
Volunteer Skills Needed
At least 18 years of age, except for Youth Mentors, who may be 16 or older Must have:
• A high school diploma or GED
• A reasonable command of English
Volunteer Responsibilities
Tutor your student one-to-one for 2 hours each week, at a location and time convenient for you and your student. We match you with a student who lives near you, and has compatible time availability, so that meeting is convenient.
Attend 18 hours of training, during which we train you to work with your student. Candidates with teaching experience may be exempt from part of this 18 hours of training.
Commit to tutor your student for approximately one (1) year.
