Organization Mission
Literacy Volunteers of America began in 1962 as a small, grassroots effort to wipe out illiteracy in Syracuse, New York. We are currently coordinating a number of activities relating to literacy education, these include:
Free one-to-one tutoring in Basic Literacy or English as a Second Language for adults in Erie County
Afterschool tutoring programs for City of Buffalo youth
Neighborhood Literacy Drop-In Centers
Neighborhood Literacy Drop-In-Centers

Peer-to-Peer Tutoring Programs (trained teenagers tutoring youth in the community)

Type of Volunteer Needed
Tutors. Can be from any background but must have strong desire to work with a student consistently for at least one year.
Volunteer Skills Needed
At least 18 years of age.
• Be able to speak, read, and write the English language well enough to communicate clearly.
• Have at least a high school diploma
Volunteer Responsibilities
Attend all initial workshop training sessions, totaling 12 hours of training. See details below.
Pay a $30 fee that will be used towards your materials and resources during training. This fee will be payable during your Orientation module by cash, check or credit card.
Agree to meet your learner in a public place.
Commit to at least 100 hours of tutoring (about 2 hours per week for 1 year).
