Literacy Empowerment Action Plan of WNY, Inc.'s mission is to equip individuals to challenge and change their world through powerful literacy. Powerful literacy involves creativity, analysis, synthesis, and critical evaluation. Opposed to viewing individuals as victims, we embed literacy skills in problem-solving activities that raise consciousness about their own power to control and improve conditions in their lives and communities. LEAP provides quality reading instruction to struggling readers and operates a children's library located in a high risk neighborhood in Tonawanda

Volunteer Skills Needed
We wiill train volunteer but past tutoring experience is helpful. Ability to work one on one with a struggling reader ability to commit to 12 days (1.5 hrs/day) of one on one instruction with a student
Volunteer Responsibilities
One on one reading instruction administer program reading assessments to inform instruction
formulate individualized goals for student based on need (with assistance from program supervisor)
design reading lessons/or may use available lessons already planned (again, assistance from supervisors always available)
