Organization Mission

Audubon NY is the New York State Office of the National Audubon Society. Audubon’s mission is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and the earth’s biological diversity. Our innovative school-based environmental education program, called “For the Birds!” teaches science, environmental awareness, and appreciation of nature through the study of birds. This program, which has been extremely successful in other areas of the state, is coming to western New York!

Type of Volunteer Needed
Ages 18 and above.
We are looking for volunteers to assist our educators or to teach the program themselves in schools throughout Niagara County. Volunteer positions include lead teacher, assistant teacher, and field trip assistant. Each session runs for eight weeks, and includes both classroom instruction and outdoor experiences.
Volunteer Skills Needed
This volunteer opportunity is open to anyone who enjoys working with children and appreciates nature. Previous experience with children ages 7-11 and some knowledge of birds are preferred, but not required, for assistant teachers. No special skills are required for field trip assistants. We also need volunteers with gardening skills for occassional habitat improvement projects.
Volunteer Responsibilities

Lead and assistant teachers will implement an 8-week curriculum designed to teach science and envieonmental awareness to children in grades 2-5. Volunteers must serve as assistant teachers for at least one 8-week session before serving as a lead teacher. Field trip assistants will help lead groups of children on nature walks in local state parks and nature preserves.Other volunteers are needed on an occassional basis to assist with classroom activities or special projects.
