Organization Mission
The Buffalo Alliance for Education (BAE) is an independent, non-profit organization with a successful history of connecting outside organizations to schools to enhance and enrich student achievement. The BAE originated in 1992 by business leaders with a commitment to change Buffalo Public Schools through facilitating business-school partnerships. Today, we have expanded to include several programs, publications and outreach events to provide resources for 750 schools throughout the Western New York region, with particular attention to those in high poverty schools.

Volunteer Responsibilities

There are two aspects of the program: 1) Mentors will meet with students at school before school, during school, after school, or on Saturday to help students learn to enjoy reading and build their reading and academic skills, and 2) Mentors and students will have periodic opportunities throughout the year to participate in special community learning experiences, social activities, and events organized through the school.

The mentor role is that of a friend, coach, and academic guide. A mentor will meet with a mentee at school twice a week for an hour at a time over the period of a year. Mentors must complete a careful screening process and thorough training to participate in the program. Our mission is to support parents, students, and mentors throughout the year to ensure a successful and fulfilling learning experience for students.
